Google’s new chatbot based on artificial intelligence gave a wrong answer in a commercial video about the American James Webb space telescope Bard, which shook the confidence of investors, the online edition of the Guardian wrote on Thursday.

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, lost $100 billion in market value after the Reuters news agency reported on an error in a commercial for the Bard chatbot published on Monday. The video shows Bard in action, promising to help simplify complicated things, but instead, the robot gave the wrong answer.

In the advertising video, Bard is asked what new discoveries of the James Webb space telescope of the American space agency (NASA) can be told to a nine-year-old child. Bard gives a number of answers to this, including that they used James Webb to take the first image of an extrasolar planet. In contrast, the first such recording was made by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) in 2004, NASA confirmed.

Bard’s commercial on Twitter was seen by more than 1.5 million people.

A Google spokesperson said it “highlights the importance of the rigorous testing process we’re launching this week with our trusted testing program.” He added that external feedback is compared to their internal testing to ensure that “Bard’s responses meet the standards of quality, safety and real-world validity.”

In Google’s live presentation on Wednesday morning – local time – no details were given about how and when the company will integrate Bard into its search engine.
